Mapnil
Trademark policy
Mapnil’s code is free software (the Mozilla Public License 2.0): you may use it, change it and share it. The name and the brand are a different matter. They tell people that something comes from the Mapnil project, so this policy keeps them for that.
The marks are the name Mapnil™, the Mapnil logo, and the look of mapnil.net (its typeface, colours and halftone artwork used together).
What you may do without asking
- Refer to Mapnil by name: in articles, reviews, talks, tutorials, courses, and links to the project.
- Say what your work is based on: “based on Mapnil”, “a fork of Mapnil”, “compatible with Mapnil”, in plain text, as long as your own name comes first and nobody would think Mapnil made or approves it.
- Share unmodified copies of the code under its name, exactly as the project publishes it.
- Run Mapnil for yourself or your organisation, changed or not, and say internally that it is Mapnil.
What needs a different name
- A changed version you share or offer to others (a fork, a distribution, a hosted service): give it its own name and logo. You may say it is based on Mapnil, as above.
- Products, services, companies and domain names: none may be called Mapnil or anything easily confused with it (“Mapnil Pro”, “MapnilHost”, “mapnil-sites.com”, a similar-sounding name, a look-alike logo).
- Endorsement: no wording, logo use or design that suggests the Mapnil project made, checked or recommends your work.
- The logo: only to link to or write about the project, unchanged, never as part of your own logo or product.
Asking
For anything else, such as a community event, merchandise or a partnership, write to hello@mapnil.net. We usually say yes to uses that help people find and use Mapnil.
This policy may change; the current version is here and in the mapnil-core repository.
